Ian founded Taitem in 1989. Since stepping down as President a few years ago, Ian mainly does energy-related work, such as quality assurance, project support, policy projects for city and state government, and research projects. He recently helped the City of Ithaca and Town of Ithaca develop a local energy code that currently reduces carbon emissions by 80% in new buildings, and will require fossil-fuel free buildings starting in 2026.
He is the author of the textbooks Energy Audits and Improvements for Commercial Buildings (2016, Wiley), and the co-author with Francis D.K. Ching of Green Building Illustrated (2014, 2nd edition 2020, Wiley). Green Building Illustrated has been translated into Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, and Korean. He has been a visiting lecturer Cornell, Syracuse University, SUNY Binghamton, and Tompkins Cortland Community College. Ian holds an undergraduate degree from McGill University, and an MS from Columbia University, both in mechanical engineering. Ian is a licensed professional engineer and is a LEED-accredited.
