research
Taitem’s research efforts focus on bringing practical, energy-saving solutions to building owners. Recent projects include: optimizing deep energy retrofits, evaluating emerging technologies, overcoming barriers to adoption of solid state lighting, evaluating controls options for exterior and corridor lighting, and making the case for variable refrigerant flow heat pumps to replace steam.
Taitem has partnered with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, the Syracuse Center of Excellence, private corporations, and others for past research studies and has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and trade publications.
Taitem earned the national R&D100 award for its work in developing TREAT energy modeling software, the only energy audit software approved by the U.S. DOE for all residential housing types, including multifamily. In 2006, Taitem Engineering led the technical effort to develop the EnergyStar rating system for new high-performance multifamily buildings, in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and NYSERDA. Taitem also provides technical training in energy code compliance, energy project construction management, and conducting energy audits. Past clients include NYSERDA and NYS Homes and Community Renewal’s Weatherization Assistance Program.
